The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

$4.26

This final chapter of Peter Jackson’s sprawling adaptation of Tolkien’s “Ring” trilogy closes out one of the most accomplished cycles in cinema–and film music–history. As he’s done for the saga’s first two installments, composer Howard Shore has honed a mature, brooding orchestral masterpiece that’s long on subtle shadings of mood and nuance, while eschewing the hollow bombast that’s characteriz…

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

$5.11

Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of “Concerning Hobbits” to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of “A Kn…

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

$8.73

Howard Shore’s music for the massively successful first film chapter of Tolkien’s Ring saga won him the OscarĀ® for Best Original Score, something of a surprise given the music’s ambitious scale and determinedly dark overtones, factors that handily blurred the line between typical film fantasy music and accomplished concert work. Its sequel takes the same, often Wagnerian-scaled dramatic tack, fol…

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring / The Two Towers / The Return of the King Extended Editions) [Blu-ray]

$49.89

As the triumphant start of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson’s ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien’s creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it’s long enou…

Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) jo…

    It can't.

    I'm sorry, but I've seen this before – I'd love to know what eejit in the educational system thought up this non-comparison to inflict on students, because nobody in real litcrit circles sees any reference to the Great Depression in the book.

    I suppose you might make some vague comparison about the breakdown of society. However, "Lord of the Flies" has two main influences:

    1) a long tradition of works about what happens to civilised people when marooned on islands (notably it's a riposte to the ever-so-decent boys on RM Ballantyne's "A Coral Island"), but you could add JM Barrie's "The Admirable Crichton" (where social order becomes reversed, and a butler becomes the lord of the island);

    2) 20th century politics, where two world wars, especially the second, had shaken many intellectuals to the core about the darkness of human nature; and raised issues about the demonisation of "the other" (i.e. the unknown, the enemy, the rival, or whatever). And a dig probably at Rousseau's "Emil", which argued for a natural morality in children.
