Race refers to a SPECIES. Using race to refer to a different culture or ethnicity is technically incorrect. I would say that using the word "race" is a socially and politically constructed ideology used to dehumanize another culture. As far as I know, it started with Columbus and the "Indians". The settlers began separating the Native Americans by declaring them a different race. This dehumanization allowed for clearer conscience when settlers massacred them. This term was continued into the 1800s with slavery, and the term never really left.
