Online Shadows

A professional reference might be a former boss, or a teacher if you don't have any former bosses, or even a co-worker – somebody who can say something about your work. And you should always ask permission of someone before listing them as a reference.
Depending on the type of electrical work you are planning to apprentice in, a basic set of tools would start with one of each of the following:
hammer,
1/8" – 3/16" slotted screw driver,
1/2" slotted screw driver,
linesman's pliers,
philips screw drivers (#'s 1, 2, & 3)
side cutters,
wire strippers,
keyhole saw,
hack saw,
channel-lock pliers,
crescent wrench,
proximity tester,
multimeter, (600v min.) – optional – may not be needed right away.

Depending on your employer, some of the above may be supplied for you by the company. Check with your employer. The most expensive items will include the multimeter and a pair of good quality linesman's pliers. If this is his career choice, look for fairly good quality tools. Items such as the wire strippers and side cutters will likely wear out or get dull sooner than some of the other items, so they don't necessarily need to be the best quality or most expensive one that you can find. My advice is to go to an electrical wholesaler. They will have a selection of the most common items. Make sure that he tries them out. Check for good feel and balance. Grips on screw drivers can be somewhat tricky sometimes. Remember that he will need to use these tools all day long and will be using them with quite a bit of pressure on the hands. If the grips aren't good quality, he will get blisters on his hands. Rubber or rubberized handles are usually quite good. The same goes for the tool pouches and belt. They need to be comfortable if he's going to be wearing them all day long. A pair of suspenders may also be useful for supporting the tool belt and keeping the weight distributed better.
