OK, let's analyze your question. Playing "the" game? What game are you talking about? Some games are more amenable to having fun than others.
So, we must continue the analysis in a general fashion, rather than in regard to a single game
Then, we must analyze what success means. It means different things for different people. If you are playing a game of chess with your ten-year-old daughter, success means seeing her enjoying herself, learning how to plan ahead, how to defend her own king, how to set up an attack etc. If, on the other hand, you are a professional chess player in a tournament, success probably means winning the game.
Your high school football coach's job depended on him winning games, not on whether his players enjoyed playing. He found it hard to enjoy himself when the team lost because it exacerbated his anxiety about retaining his job.
Another observation: for some people playing some games, success IS having fun, such as that chess game between father and daughter. Winning and losing are secondary matters.
The ideal resolution would be to have fun while winning, if indeed winning is the goal. If you ever watched Michael Jordan sticking his tongue out while driving by his opponent on his way to the rim, slamming it down and then running back up the court smiling all the way, high fiving Scottie Pippen, you will understand that indeed the very best players of any game have the most fun, are the most successful.
