The voters in these polls assign a certain amount of points to teams they feel are worthy of being ranked amongst the nation's top twenty-five teams. It starts with assigning 25 points to a team that a voter feels should be the number one team in the country, then 24 points to a number two team, 23 to a #3 team, and this goes on until they reach the number 25 team, which will be assigned one point. A voter can only assign one team a particular number (for instance, a voter can't give three different teams twenty-five points each). Once every voter submits their rankings, the polls add up the point totals for each team that has received points and it ranks them automatically. If a team gathers all first place votes then it will have the maximum amount of points possible (which for the AP 25 is 1800 with 72 people voting, hence 72 X 25 = 1800).

    Hope this helps!
