Matters Playstation

What is the difference between the first generation of Playstation 2 and the new, slimmer PlayStation 2?
I am thinking of buying one Playstation 2 system used, and I wondered if the previous version suits my needs. I am not a current player, and have not had one before. I will use it for games from time to time. I will use the DVD player. I'm not going to use to go on the Internet. Try to keep costs down, so was wondering if it's important to know if I can get again, "bigger" version, or should focus on getting the Slim model. Thank you.
There are bascially the same but bigger is better, because it heats faster than the lean. If you play a lot can damage the system.
