China cymbals tend to have a very loud, harsh attack without a lot of sustain. Think of cymbals as punctuation and a china type might be an exclamation point. They tend to fit in a more rock or aggressive sound and can be very annoying when used out of context. That being said, there are no rules about different types of cymbals, just general guidelines. If you strike a good cymbal 100 different ways you will get 100 variations of the sound. It also depends on the diameter and thickness of the cymbal. I like to tap chinas lightly sometimes in a jazzier context or with brushes. It takes time and experience to "get to know" your cymbals and what they do best. Trust your ears and really listen to what is being played around you and how that sound blends in. I have some cymbals I have been playing 30yrs. and I am always learning new things about them. Cracked cymbals rarely sound as good as a well made new one – especially with Zildjians! I've known a few drummers, and heard the difference, from new to small crack to big crack… cracks do not great tone make.
I would not buy a cracked cymbal – as others have said, it's just a matter of (brief!) time until that thing busts. I wouldn't buy something that might bust in the middle of a gig…. I would say go for a cheaper new one or save up for the good stuff. I'm also not keen on trying to fix broken cymbals. =)
That said, I'm just a guitar player. (grin) I found some links for you of drummers talking about it. It sounds like it really depends on the severity of the crack.
I like the soldering idea – if you're not shelling out huge wads of cash and you can accept the idea that none of this may actually result in a usable cymbal maybe it would be worth it, if only for the experience.
