What is the advantage of using digital optical vs RCA digital?

I just bought a Bose audio system has only one digital audio Optical (Toslink) and the rest of the entries are entering the digital inputs on RCA. What are the benefits (if applicable) to use the digital vs optical digital RCA inputs, and these differences are obvious to the casual consumer? Just to clarify, I mean the Orange RCA port marked "Digital Audio" instead of red and white ports, which I believe are in stereo only.

For digital audio, there is no advantage to both perform exactly the same signal S / PDIF. optics is insensitive to electrical interference, but also an RCA cable. There is no appreciable difference in sound, both get exactly the same bits there.
