Can he sort by colour? For instance can he put the right lids on felt tip pens, or sort a pile of otherwise identical mixed red, yellow and blue bricks?

It _is_ normal for kids to be confused by the concept of colour at this age, because it's a very abstract concept. Think about it for a moment. So far all the names he's learned are for "things". Car, boat, teddy… now suddenly this thing isn't "car" it's "blue".

Can he read numbers? If so, he might be old enough to do the standard colourblindness tests (you know, those ones with lots of circles of different shades and a number hidden in them, and you see a different number if you are colourblind?) But he's still probably a bit young for it.

I would speak to your health visitor about it – but it's probably too early for him to be tested unless, like I said, he's a fairly advanced reader, because that's what the tests rely on. When he's old enough to go to a standard optician, they'll definitely test him.

Edit: Really don't worry about the parents of geniuses who have answered you above me. At 15 months my son barely said "mummy" let alone knew all his colours :) He could read before he was 3, and now has a reading and spelling age of "adult". Not matching colours with their names at 3 1/2 is not at all unusual.

I need a writer. The writer should be passionate about gaming or should have the ability to write about Diablo 3, a new game from the Diablo Series. There is no need to tell that I want a writer who is fluent in his language and work… (Budget: $30-$250 USD, Jobs: Articles, Copywriting, Ghostwriting) Go [...]

alright, I still don’t know what the key is for, but I finally got out of the building. there is a place on the second floor where the path is blocked by rocks. if you use the shovel you can continue. you’ll see a cutscene involving a helicopter. in a room to the north, you’ll see a bolt and a odd stick thingy. if you take them to the room with the two sets of stairs and go all the way down, you’ll see a generator. if you use the stick thing on it you will drain the sewer.

Let each child spray or dip a few cotton balls in water and drop the moistened balls into a ziplock bag with 2 or 3 bean seeds. The bean seeds will germinate quickly and the children will be fascinated watching how the seeds start to grow. At the same time, you could also let them plant a couple of seeds in a cup so they watch the plants grow, or you could help them plant their germinated seeds. (They will need a lot of support though if you let them plant the germinated seeds as the plants are a bit delicate!) If you choose bush beans, you may be able to plant them outside your center and harvest some beans to eat in the summer! Gail Gibbons' book From Seed to Plant, or Eric Carle's The Very Tiny Seed would go well with these activities.

Also, try putting celery stalks or white carnations into water tinted with food coloring to show them how plants draw water and nutrients up from the soil to help them grow. You can also split the stems or stalks and put the split sections into 2 different colors to see what happens. These are wonderful science activities that fit into the topics you requested, and very age-appropriate for the children you mentioned. You could use a book like Round the Garden by Omri Glaser with this. Sing Tooty-Ta by Dr. Jean and talk about how important rain is to plants and to us.

You could also cut the individual cups out of cardboard egg cartons and let the children make flowers out of them using various collage materials. Recycle stuff from your classroom like scraps of paper to make leaves, etc. You might like to use Lois Ehlert's Planting a Rainbow to go with this activity.

Also, do something with butterflies! The kids will love it. Let them color coffee filters with washable markers, then spray the filters with water so the colors run. After they dry, tie them in the middle with pretty pipe cleaners. You can hang the butterflies from the ceiling, attach magnets to make refrigerator magnets, or staple them on a bulletin board to show the butterfly life-cycle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is of course the classic book to go with this this. (To make a bulletin board, you could google for an image of the cover of the book, enlarge it, and staple the butterflies all around it. Makes a pretty display.) You can also buy butterfly eggs and hatch some to release on a sunny day!

Get some frog eggs to hatch and watch the tadpoles grow into frogs. The kids will love it! They can sing and act out Five Little Frogs, and you can read tons of books on this subject, such as From Tadpole to Frog by Jan Kottke. We used small pieces of little bubble wrap to represent frog eggs, and the children drew and cut out tadpoles and frogs. Then we tied them together to make hanging displays showing how frogs develop from egg, to tadpole to frog. Made a great display and the kids loved it.

Go on a nature walk. Give the children each a pair of plastic gloves to wear and a bag to carry so you can safely pick up litter and beautify your community. Read The Earth and I by Frank Asch and talk about why it's important for all of us to work together to take care of our world. You could also read If Everybody Did and talk about what would happen if everybody just threw their trash on the ground outside.

Raise funds for a project of some sort, like new balls for the playground, or a field trip, by recycling cans. Encourage the parents to rinse and bring in aluminum cans for the children to recycle. Remember that they can be sharp though so you'll probably want to minimize handling of the cans by the kids. Read Recycle by Gail Gibbons.

Ok, there's 7 ideas, all based on books, songs, etc.! And your parents will love the science aspects of these activities! In fact, you might want to have your little scientists keep a science journal with drawings in it about what they are learning. (There are some great books you could introduce the whole thing with. Try What is a Scientist? by Barbara Lehn. I would suggest staying away from an arts-and-crafts focus and really go for more of a science approach.
