No, but you do want to give it the manufactures suggested "first charge'. Some recommend as much as a 14hr charge the first time. It is also true that at least once a month you should completely discharge it and then give it another full charge. Many newer cameras now have a battery discharge feature built in just for that reason. It will extend the battery's life.
The problem with this Tool is that some Manufacturers require 13.8 Volts during re-programming and this unit is pre-set at 14.2 Volts. Schumacher or NAPA offers a unit that has variable Voltage during re-programming, which is the way to go.
How about using that to charge batteries that are already installed in a device?

if your car doesnt have any electrical loads while it is off.(which it shouldnt, regardless of age) and you have a decent battery then you should be fine. that kind of stuff is more of a quick fix for minor problems.
