I guess it all comes down to your mental strength and personal interest. There are so many aspects of marine biology that you can become specialized in. Some people prefer it and can thrive in that environment where you can become an expert in a particular area. They might lose interest if they are not learning of working on something that applies to their specific interest. Other people prefer the option of dealing with a wide range of issues. For examples someone that likes doing research in the field half the time and the other half in the laboratory. If they were just in the lab they would go crazy or if they were just in the field they would go crazy, too. Or if they just worked on fish ALL THE TIME. they might also be intersted in crabs. It happens but it depends on the personality.
For me, I started out with a lot of interest within the field of marine biology. However, as I progressed through college I was able to narrow my interest to something more specific. I didnt lose interest in those other areas, i just decided that as a career choice this area interested me the most and I thought I would be happiest pursuing it. Specifically, I narrowed it down to using genetics to understand how populations are connected within different invertebrates populations and how species form. Going that route allowed me to have time in the lab doing experience but also time in the field doign hands on work. I would not want to be just in the lab or just in the field. But also, I wouldnt want to be doing field and lab work on algae. I think algae is so boring so my heart wouldnt be into it.
As I continue my education, I have seen alot of people become burnt out. Many times its when they are doing research. Unfortunately, many of the those people decide that research is not for them any longer. Some of that dealt with the professors they were doing research wiht. If your professor is difficult and negative it will effect you and thats why I say you need to be mentally strong. I also think some of it has do with your interests too. I imagine if I didnt get along wiht my research advisor but I loved my project I would just deal with it because I am doign something I love.
