The holiday Xbox 360 S bundle packing Alan Wake and Forza 3 has been confirmed for the US. Previously revealed for multiple territories, Major Nelson has officially unveiled the bundle for the US. I have 2 rooms that need to be installed and I currently have ATT Uverse. There are no cable lines in my house. Will there be extra charges to do a clean install?
There are so many possible systems that could fulfill your requirements that it is difficult to give you a specific answer. Better to give you some options that you need to look at and find a system that matches.
To leave a system on 24/7, the info you got from Best Buy is sort of correct. You need to ensure as little heat build up as possible. Additionally, you need the most robust components. A full tower isn't necessary for this. A mid-tower would work just fine. Most give you perfectly decent airflow and more importantly, typically utilize 120mm fans for cooling. Why is this important?
As an HTPC (Home Theater PC) or entertainment system, not only do you want low heat…but low noise too! The larger the fan, typically the lower the noise to airflow ratio you'll get. 120mm fans will push a lot of air at lower noise levels. Also, since they tend to run at lower RPMs to do this than smaller 80mm fans, they'll last a lot longer, an important factor in leaving a machine on all the time. Any mid tower with a MINIMUM of 2 fans will suffice. One intake, one exhaust. It is preferrable to have 2 exhaust fans though. Two rear or one rear one top.
The next thing you want is are components that do not run hot. This means a Processor that doesn't consume a lot of power and a video card that does the same. The Core 2 Duo 8xxx series runs at 65 watts and will give you PLENTY of headroom for what you've said you want to do. Sure, they're not the latest CPUs, but they're very good, very cheap and very COOL running.
Video cards…well, if you want to game then a 256MB card probably won't cut it anymore. I'd suggest a 512 card at a minimum. The newer nvidia 260GTX or 275 GTX sound like they would be a fine card for you. They're a good blend of performance and relatively conservative power consumption (won't run scorching hot).
This being said….ANY system that provides you with this mix should be a fine choice. However, if it isn't evident from my answer so far, I really recommend building your own. Just buy your components so you can pick exactly what you want. You'll also end up with the best system for the leat amount of money.
