Throughout the Cold War, U.S. forces always were ready to launch a nuclear attack against the Soviet Union. Fortunately, there was never a real need for it.

Spartan hoplites started out as heavy infantry wearing metal armour – helmet,breastplate,and greaves (which protected the shins).This was all worn from about 700 BC to 450 BC.
After 450 BC, armour became lighter.The metal helmet and greaves remained, but the breastplate was replaced with body armour made from folded linen and strips of leather.
As for battle tactics, the phalanx consisted of units made up of 8 rows of 32 men, which would deploy next to each other depending on the size of a given army. 16 such units made up what was called a 'Simple' phalanx of 4,096 hoplites. If there were more hoplites present, the extra units were used to start to form a second 'Simple' phalanx.
This formation continued in use till 225 BC, when Sparta re-equipped its hoplites, the main armament changing from a 9-12 feet long thrusting spear to a 16-24 feet long pike. The phalanx now doubled in depth and narrowed in frontage, the formation consisting of units made up of 16 rows of 32 men, 8 such units deployed next to each other to make up a 'Simple' phalanx which,despite the change in formation, remained at a strength of 4,096 men (although it should be pointed out that the Spartans rarely had the manpower to put more than about 1000 pikemen into the field by this date).
Whether the phalanx was armed with long spears or pikes,it was intended tp work in battle through a combination of shock (the first contact) and momentum, the depth of the formation and the close order of the troops comprising it producing momentum that physically pushed the enemy back.Those in ranks further back could, because of the length of their spears (later pikes) could still get at the enemy and cause them casualties.
