First, take the positive battery cable clamp off the battery post & clean the inside of the clamp & the post. Ford's have a reputation for corroding the inside of the clamp. If that fixes the problem, make a mental note to take that clamp apart & clean it once a year or so…

You shouldn't charge a battery that way, it can cause damage to the other cars battery. Now, once the car is started, you shouldn't actually need battery power except to run accessories such as the radio so jump starting the dead car should be sufficient.
